EVOLVING TRADITIONSAn online curatorial project by Raquel Chapa, Abraham Lubelski, and Daniel Rothbart In recent years a group of Native American artists has reinterpreted traditional arts, infusing the with new political and cultural meaning. These artists often examine the convergence of Native culture with contemporary American society, its complexities, and contradictions. This exhibition draws work from Native artists of different generations who work with diverse media. Together they explore issues of Native identity in the language of art past and present. Alyssa Hinton Alyssa Hinton is a mixed media artist and painter of Tuscarora background who currently resides in Carrboro, North Carolina, the traditional homeland of her ancestors. Through photographic collage she illustrates some of the oral history that is prevalent among the tribes of the Southeast. While the medium she uses is very modern, her subject matter is ancient. In addition, she uses both amorphous and very literal figures, generating a multi-layered effect. In so doing, she takes iconic figures of the oral tradition, such as the deer man, and filters them through a modern lens, portraying the beauty and complexity of Indian tradition in a contemporary world. |
